A four day, accelerated, basic skills course for nurse and doctor trainee colonoscopists.*
 
Awarded 22 CPD credits by the Royal College of Physicians.

Aims

  • To teach basic endoscope handling
  • To develop correct insertion technique with understanding of torque steering, loop withdrawal and ancillary manoeuvres taking advantage of 'micro-teaching' opportunities, especially on the Olympus/St. Mark's colonoscopy simulator
  • To introduce basic polypectomy
  • To emphasise good examination technique during withdrawal
  • To improve core knowledge relating to all aspects of colonoscopic practice
  • To emphasise quality issues in colonoscopy practice such as safe sedation, informed consent, list management and endoscopic surveillance.
Methodology
Sessions would include
  • 4 hands-on colonoscopy lists with expert trainers
  • 2 AV teaching sessions utilising DVD-ROM, textbooks and videos
  • 2 formal simulator training sessions and unlimited access during the week
  • Continous feedback 
  • Debrief session
Outcome measures
To continue validation of this course, assessments would take place of
  • Core knowledge (validated MCQ) at beginning and end of week
  • Simulator test cases at beginning and end of week
  • Expert assessment of key elements of procedure scored daily using visual analogue scales (consent, staff interaction, insertion technique, recognition of caecal landmarks, withdrawal technique, polypectomy etc & overall assessment of fitness to practice)
  • Tri-split video assessment at beginning and end of week.
Evaluation
Continuous feedback obtained during the week and a final feedback questionnaire.
