BRONCHOSCOPY PATIENT DISCHARGE INFORMATION

What to expect after Bronchoscopy

Patient recovering after endoscopy procedure
Endoscopy patient recovery
The local anaesthetic wears off after 1-2 hours, following which you may have fluids (sips of cold water to start is advisable) To make sure normal sensation has returned. You may then resume your normal diet.

Soreness of the throat
Is usually slight and persists for only 24 hours or so.

Blood
May be coughed up (after biopsy) but this is usually trivial and for less than 24 hours. Heavier bleeding should be reported straight away.

Fever
Occasionally may occur for 24 - 48 hours after full bronchial lavage; this does not usually require treatment.

Activities
If you have been given sedation during the procedure it will make you less alert than usual and you should therefore not make any major decisions today, or drive. You may resume normal activities on the day after the examination unless you have a very active or unusual occupation. Things to report to your doctor
  • Severe Chest Pain
  • Coughing up large amounts of blood
If you have any worries please do not hesitate to contact the Endoscopy Department, your own GP or go to the Accident & Emergency Department of your local hospital.
