Endoscopy simulator training
A six-month theoretical and practical flexible sigmoidoscopy-training programme for trainee nurse endoscopists based at BSc degree level in collaboration with St Mary's Hospital London and City University London, based on the JAG endoscopy training common foundation programme. 12 nurse trainees per course.

Aims
  • To demonstrate advanced knowledge of the normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology of the GI tract
  • To develop and demonstrate safe and accurate flexible sigmoidoscopy skills in line with JAG guidelines
  • To fulfil the criteria of the common foundation programme for flexible sigmoidoscopy training (JAG 2001)
  • To demonstrate knowledge of common disease processes of the GI tract and demonstrate knowledge of appropriate interventions and treatment pathways
  • To develop & demonstrate nurse practitioner skills for patient assessment, clinical evaluation, performance of flexible sigmoidoscopy and to plan appropriate follow up care
Methodology
Classroom based teaching, computer simulation, one-to-one practical hands-on training and formal seminars.

Evaluation
Formative assessments including
  • Seminars
  • MCQ exam
  • Practical Flexible sigmoidoscopy OSCE
  • Written Assignments
  • Video procedure evaluation ('tri-split' assessment)
